Tonfo

Arcade · Everyone / 4+

Three lives, one hammer, and moles that never stop.

Whack the mole before it drops. Miss it, or hit bare ground, and you lose one of three lives. It only ever gets faster.

The long version

Tonfo is the sound a hammer makes when it lands. The game is endless: there is no level to finish and no timer to run out, only three lives and a board that keeps getting busier.

The difficulty is a curve rather than a setting. A mole starts out generous, and over six minutes the time it stays up falls to the floor and the gap between moles closes to the fastest one thumb can sustain. After that the board stops getting quicker and starts getting fuller: a second mole begins to overlap the first, closer and closer, until the two arrive together. Two is the ceiling, and it is enforced in the engine rather than hoped for.

The floor is not a taste. It is worked out from how long a person takes to see a mole and move a thumb to it, using Fitts's law over the widest journey that board can ask for, plus the time a phone takes to turn a touch into a lit pixel. Every board the game deals is one you could have cleared, and a test runs the curve out to ten minutes to prove it.

Three boards, three rhythms

Three holes in a line, then a 3 by 3, then a 5 by 5. Each opens once you have finished ten games on the one before.

Always hittable

Never more than two moles at once, and never one that could not be reached in time. The engine refuses to deal an unfair board.

Streaks pay

Consecutive hits multiply what each mole is worth. One swing at bare ground and the streak is gone.

A leaderboard per board

A 5 by 5 score and a three hole score are not the same achievement, so they are not the same table.
