The long version

A board that ends in a coin flip is the most hated thing in this genre, because you did everything right and lost anyway. Talpa refuses to deal one. Every board is checked before you see it, and if it cannot be finished by reasoning, it is repaired until it can.

The checking is done the way a person plays: counting a number's neighbours, subtracting two overlapping numbers from each other, and using the mine counter at the top of the screen as a constraint on everything still covered. Anything a solver could only crack by enumerating thousands of arrangements is treated as a guess, because at the kitchen table that is exactly what it is.

The first dig always opens an area rather than a bare number, so you start with something to reason about instead of a coin flip on move two.
